Scientific research in the field of biology of cancer has been conducted in the Gliwice branch of MSCI since 1950. At the beginning under the direction of prof. Kazimierz Dux the Department of Biopathology of Cancer was created, which was then transformed into the Department of Biology of Cancer. From 1997 to 2010 the Research Division of the Oncology Centre was comprised of three departments: the Department of Molecular Biology (under the direction of prof. Stanisław Szala), the Department of Biology of Cancer (under the direction of prof. Zdzisław Krawczyk) and the Department of Experimental and Clinical Radiobiology (under the direction of prof. Joanna Rzeszowska-Wolny). In 2004 the Research Division of the Oncology Centre (as one of two facilities conducting research in the field of oncology) was granted the status of the Centre of Excellence by the Ministry of Science and Computerization. In 2010 the structure of the Research Division was changed and in place of the three departments a Centre for Translational Research and Molecular Biology of Cancer (CBT) was created.
Research Topics
Scientific research conducted by the Center focuses on the molecular biology of cancer and the translation of research results into clinical practice (translational research, in short). General objectives of the Center cover new methods of molecular diagnostics and experimental anticancer therapies. Research specifically focuses on: (i) genetic risk factor in cancer predisposition, (ii) new prognostic and predictive markers for cancer therapy; (iii) genomic and proteomic signatures for cancer identification and classification; (iv) new diagnostic tools for monitoring the therapy; (v) pharmacology and biology of new anticancer drugs; (vi) new vectors and strategies of drug delivery; (vii) cancer models. Furthermore, the Centre conducts projects dealing with the molecular aspects of the answer of the cancerous cell to the factors used in the oncological therapy. More information about the topics of the research conducted in the Centre for Translational Research and Molecular Biology of Cancer can be found on the website (http://cd.io.gliwice.pl/en/).
